How To Handle A Top Spin Kick Serve
How do you handle a top spin kick serve ?
Do you stay further back or take it before the ball bounces high ?
How do you take the ball on the rise ?
Yes, you can do it both ways - either go back and wait for the ball to lose some spin and speed and drop lower to a more comfortable hitting zone OR hit the ball on the rise, before it gets to high.
The “go back” method can work well on clay courts but most of the times you need to return with a high, deep [tag]top spin[/tag] shot which will give you time to recover back to the middle. (if the [tag]kick serve[/tag] was wide)
On hard courts you usually get punished unless the opponent has a weaker side and you can play your return there.
Taking the ball on the rise is not that difficult as it seems. But the key is that you don’t really hit the ball hard.
Instead, it’s more of a block type of shot and your goal is to get it deep down the middle or cross court.
You also need to move against the ball - move forward - and try and see it clearly for a clean contact.
When you start working on this early return just focus on good contact point on front of you and play the ball deep.
DON’T go for speed. Just learn to time your shot and read the bounce of the ball first.
You need to get comfortable with this first before you start looking for a little more power.
But even then your main goal should be to use the speed of the incoming serve to generate speed and not to swing much at the ball.
