Andy Roddick – Roger Federer US Open 2007 QF Match

Roger Federer – Andy Roddick quarterfinal match at the US Open 2007 was one of the highest quality tennis matches I’ve seen lately.

It reminded me of the famous Agassi – Sampras quarterfinal match in 2000 when all 4 sets went to tie-break and Sampras won 3-1.

Andy had the right tactic to play Roger – attack the attacker.

Roger is at his best when he controls the game, makes you run, makes you hit low sliced balls and forces you to make impossible passing shots.

Andy Roddick (and Jimmy Connors probably ;) ) decided that the best tactic is to put Roger in defense EVEN if this means increasing the risks and volleying more then Andy feels comfortable playing.

I believe that Roger Federer is the best thing that happened to Andy Roddick’s tennis. ;)

Why?

Because Andy is FORCED to improve his game, perfect his already good shots and learn new tactical variations.

This will eventually pay off for Andy.

The only thing that Andy needs to beat Federer are some moments of inspiration where he would hit almost impossible shots.

Roger does that once, twice or three times PER SET while Andy hits shots like that only once or twice PER MATCH.

And that was the only difference in the first two sets. Roger was able to hit an incredible backhand passing shot on the rise at 5:4 in the first set tie-break.

Maybe Andy needs a little more courage and belief in his shots to actually go for shots like that in crucial situations and turn the match in his favor.

Andy and Roger are both great players!!! It’s just that Roger was a little bit more experienced and more disciplined in playing tennis. But still, I love Andy. He is not only a good player but also a great person. I’ll support and love you till the end.
