Overhead And Backhand Tennis Tips

Hi Tomaz, I have two questions:

1. Very often easy looking Overhead goes into the net. Any advise?

2. My backhand not stable – very often ends up in the net or in the sky. Any ideas?

Let’s start with the smash where I see two possibilities:

1. You underestimate the difficulty of even an “easy” smash.

Then you are not 100% concentrated, not alert enough and you don’t position perfectly under the ball.

All this leads to a mistake.

Here is an example how challenging the smash is: if the ball is falling from the height of 6 meters, it will have such speed that when it comes down to your racquet, it will travel the distance from the top of the frame to the bottom of the frame in LESS than 0,05 seconds!

2. You aim too steeply down.

This a tactical or a mental mistake. Many people would really like to smash down and make the ball bounce up high. Call it ego, showing off or whatever.

It doesn’t work. ;)

Aim deeper, over the service line.

2. My backhand not stable – very often ends up in the net or in the sky. Any ideas?

Hard to say if I don’t see it.

Technically you might have a continental grip which doesn’t naturally position the racket at the right angle. You have to twist the grip a little bit and any small mistake will result in an error.

You also might not extend your arm fully when you make contact. The result is similar to above case.

Mentally, you might not trust the backhand and always hit tentatively. This doesn’t work.

Even if your backhand is not perfect, hit decisively and results will be better.

  1. Kim Says:

Why is it necessary to turn sideways or “pivot”on an overhead?

  2. Tomaz Says:

    Good question!

    1. If you have the correct continetal grip then it’s very uncomfortable and difficult to direct the ball if your body is facing the net. Try it!

    2. Sideways position enables you to move much quicker forward and backward which happens most of the times when someone lobs you.

    3. You can hit harder since you rotate towards the ball from the sideways position.
