The Right Approach To Hitting Harder
My big burning question is about hitting hard! I hear coaches ask my son to do it all the time.
When he does it he loses control and loses the match.
When he hits in a controlled way he finds a pace on the ball that works for him and that pace increases as he gets more confident.
The coaches say that he needs weapons so hit harder it will eventually work! What do you think?
Yes, the only way to learn how to hit hard is to try.
And yes, at the beginning you lose control but eventually you become better at it.
So the general approach is right, the key question is how do you go about it.
Let’s talk about levels of hitting hard and let’s say you can hit hard from 0 - just push the ball - to 10 - hit with full power.
If your son’s level is 6 now and he can control the ball, then he should try hitting levels 7 and 8 occassionally and then go back to 6 to find his rhythm, consistency and confidence again.
But if he tries to go for 9 and 10 he will have no control at all and eventually he will lose trust in his strokes and his technique will break down.
So if he wants to learn to hit hard he needs to look for gradual increase of speed.
Think for yourself this question: how would go about learning to drive the car faster? ![]()
