Can A Tennis Coach Succeed In Business?
Hi Tomaz,
My name’s David and like a lot of people i have found your tennis website very helpful. I am 20 years old and played tennis since I was 8 competing at a high level (satelites, futures events) but for one reason or another i never quite cracked it to the top.
My passion for tennis continues and i still hit regularly and do 3 days of coaching a week. I help out a well respected coach that has coached at a national level and I have learned a lot.
When i read your ‘about me‘ section i noticed you have had a similar life to me. I would like to ask you for any advice you could give me for the best ways I could be successful in tennis from a business point of view.
I hit with an up and coming junior girl and I have often thought I could use my knowledge of fitness and tennis to be a coach/hitting partner for an up an commer on the circuit, though I realize this would be hard to get in to.
Hi David,
Thanks for the kind words.
If I am not mistaken, you main question is:”I would like to ask you for any advice you could give me for the best ways i could be successful in tennis from a business point of view.”
As you can probably see, a coach typically earns money by giving lessons on court. Let’s say you coach 6 hours per day (which is a lot) and get $30 per hour. That’s $180 per day. If you work 6 days per week, that’s around 25 days in a month, you earn $4500.
After all the taxes and social security and so on, you are probably left with $2500. After you pay your rent and expenses (food, gas, …) and you live in the USA, you are probably left with $500
So in the long term, you are pretty much stuck with that. No financial and no personal freedom until you retire.
SO…
You need to complement your teaching with some extra income. These days, the best way is to use the internet where you can sell your own products to thousands of people looking for info online. You can of course sell them offline too.
So think about that as the first step.
Maybe later, you need to employ people to work for you. Because in the offline world that’s the most common way to earn more money than you work (and earn per hour).
You can open your own club and have pros work for you. But that’s quite risky.
80% of businesses fail in the first 5 years.
Why? Because people don’t have the experience. They judge the situation poorly.
So that’s my logic and that’s why I created some digital products for my tennis site with which I earn around $2500 per month. Which is a very nice addition to the other income streams I have.
