Soderling And Cibulkova Breeze To Semi-Finals Of Roland Garros

Robin Soderling’s win over Rafael Nadal was definitely not a fluke. Soderling kept his great form and dismissed Nikolay Davydenko in 3 sets; 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

I watched the match live and at first glance it was not that obvious who was the better player.

Robin Soderling wins against Davydenko at French Open 2009

Soderling and Davydenko traded groundstrokes and sometimes one guy won the point and sometimes the other guy. But somehow Soderling won the games. ;)

Davydenko was not playing well today; it was definitely a mental problem.

He might have respected Soderling too much – perhaps thinking:«If this guy beat Ferrer and Nadal, how I am going to beat him?« or perhaps he saw a big chance now that Nadal was out and just couldn’t sustain the pressure.

Soderling on the other hand didn’t let up even for a little bit and played very smart tennis; he rallied when he had to and attacked when he could. Great win for Soderling and a very dangerous opponent for Gonzales who beat Murray 3 sets to 1.

Dominika Cibulkova – Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-2

Cibulkova was on fire today and Maria was just not finding the right speed and length of the shots.

Dominika exploited Maria’s poor movement on clay and made her stretch for the ball over and over again. Dominika on the other hand is one of the best movers in the women’s game and it’s very hard to hit clean winners against her.

She brings many balls back and is able to keep high baseline tempo when she is in a good position.

The match was going similar to the men’s match mentioned above; somehow Cibulkova got a game and another one and another one…

She was leading 6-0 and 5-0 when she had her first match point!

At that point Maria started blasting every ball with full power into one of the corners in order to avoid the hum iliation of 6-0, 6-0 but the statistics soon caught up with her two games later when she missed too many shots and Cibulkova won 6-2.

Great win for Ciblukova and her best result so far; reaching the semi-finals of Roland Garros.

She will meet Dinara Safina who won 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 against Victoria Azarenka after a hard fought match. Dinara is a big favorite for the title and I really wonder if Serena will make it through to the final and confirm her 2nd seed number.

This was my last day at Roland Garros and if you haven’t attended the tournament yet, I really recommend that you do. It’s a great experience and seeing and especially hearing how the top players hit the ball is completely different that watching it on a TV.
